  1. Ireland has often suffered cruel hardships but one which shall never be forgotten was the Great Famine of 1845 to 1847. The famine was caused by the failure of the potato crop. Potatoes were the chief food of the people and on them the Irish people depended for their bodily food. In 1845 the potato blight first appeared in Ireland. The people had no means of preventing the blight from spreading and in a short time it had spread over the whole of the country. Nowadays we bue[?]-stone to spray the potatoes with as a prevention against the blight.
