  1. Cavan was not affected very much by the famine. It was the potato-crop that failed. The blight came on the potatoes and they went rotten and black especally during the year called black forty seven. Even though there was wheat and corn in the country at this time the people were starving because all the wheat had to be exported to England.
    During the famine, a cousin of the present Lord Farnham's gave soup to the poor, expecting these poor to turn their backs to the Catholic Church. These people lived in houses near "The Grand Gates"
