  1. A top can be made with a thread spool & this is how it is done.
    One end of the spool is cut to a point round the hole. Then a piece of hard stick is pointed and made to fit tightly through the hole in the spool, & coming out a little at the pointed end. Often this stick is long enough to leave a piece over the broad end of the spool at top as well.
