  1. There was a Hedge School in this town land. The Hedge schoolmaster used to teach from one house to another and perhaps six or seven persons would attend. They had no particular place to teach as they were under cover.
    They had no desks like what are in use now and they used quill pens and had rushes dipped in grease to show them light.
    Each person had to pay twopence a week, and the poor would pay nothing at all. They made great scholars.
