A fine two-storey house owned by Mr Mather, Kilnantic, Rathangan, Offaly, was burnt about ten years ago, But fortunately there was nobody injured. ANother Kilnantic house was burnt owned by Mr Reddin. It went on fire during the night, and it is told that the people were awakened by the explosion of a gun which was hanging near the fireplace.
About nineteen years ago there was an epidemic of the flu in this locality. In some houses all the people were sick, and when one of the family would be getting better, he would have to get up and attend to the rest of the family. In some cases this person would get a relapse and die.
