  1. 1.
One May morning long ago a boy was going home before daybreak from a dance. May day was on Monday and he had been out all night on the Sunday.
He was going through bogs in Carrigadaggin near Carrigbyrne Rock. He saw an old woman skimming a well and he lay in the rushes to watch her. She was so taken up with her work that she did not see him.
She skimmed away, each time throwing it in a different direction and he could hear her saying "Half so-and-so's milk and butter to me".
She was at it for some time and then the boy began saying to himself "Half that to me".
