  1. A very common saying around here is "You'll follow the crow for that yet". This saying dates back to the time of the famine, when dint of starvation made people run after the hungry crows to make them drop the "poreen" (little potatoes) out of their beaks.
    In the black years of 1846 and 1847 the potato crop failed and as all the people around here were struggling sons of the soil it affected them very sorely indeed. Wasn't it a basket of potatoes and buttermilk they had for breakfast, Wasn't it spuds and salt and maybe a noggin of milk for the child at dinner!
