When the calf was taken from the cow the sign of the cross was made on it.
When the calf was about one hour old an egg was given to him.
The calf always got the milk of the mother-cow.
On the first Friday after the calf was calved, a cut was put in its left ear as it was said to prevent "blackleg" i.e. a disease in calves.
- When cattle died of any disease the shinbones were cut out and put behind the rafters in the kitchen. This was supposed to ward off disease.
