- There are many old ruins near Navan, and about the oldest of them is Athlumney Castle. There are many stories connected with this castle. The following one, is the most interesting I have heard.
During the sixteenth century there lived in Navan two sisters who never agreed with each other. One lived in Athlumney Castle and the other in Blackcastle. The girl who lived at Blackcastle was very jealous of her sister, so one day she went to visit her, at Athlumney, and told her that their enemies had planned to seize their castles. The owner of Blackcastle said she would watch day and night for the approach of the soldiers and when she would see them she would set fire to her castle rather than give it up to her enemies. She asked the Athlumney lady to do likewise, when she saw the signal.
