- (continued from previous page)reaching the entrance to Newtown Abbey that he had forgotten a valuable book. He passed the word back through the files of monks till it reached the last two monks who were but leaving the monastery. They fetched the book and passed it on to its owner.
There were high towers on the Abbey with winding stone stairs. There were spy-holes in these towers to watch for enemies if danger was imminent. Two of those towers still remain.
The remains of one of the chapels are to be seen also on one of the windows there is beautifully carved in stone an image of Our Lord. The floor of the Chapel was tiled and on each tile was written a prayer in Latin. The tiles were removed by Mr Bolten to his own yard.
When Cromwell ordered the community to leave the Abbey all monks left it except the Abbot who remained to give up the deeds to Cromwell who asked him how long would his religion stand. The Superior answered "Till tomorrow shall come back."- Collector
