- There was a great Famine in the year 1846. The people died in great numbers along the road and under the ditches. The potato crop failed and the oats failed, too. The people got meal from the government when the potatoes failed. They ate it instead of the potatoes. The potatoes got rotten in the ground in pits. They would not grow the year after. A lot of people died in this district. It caused great misfortune in Ireland.
