- (continued from previous page)insect come down near the earth, and the swallows fly low so as to get food for themselves. There is a tradition as to how the robin got the red breast. It is said that when our Lord was dying on the cross a robin came along and tried to pick the nails out of his feet and hands, and a drop of blood fell on his breast. Since then every robin has a red breast. It is also said that when the soldiers were looking for Christ, it was the wren that told them the way to go to find him, and that is why he is chased on St Stephen's Day.
