- In olden times people used to perform cures with all classes of herbs:Stye on the eye.
Gooseberry thorns were used for curing a swollen eye. They called it the stye on the eye, by taking nine thorns of a gooseberry bush, and pointing each thorn at the eye, and while doing so would say some words, which I am unable to procure.For a sore throat.
