- My grandmother, Ms Gillooley of Drumdaff, Co. Roscommon, attended a hedge school. The teacher's name was master Hanley. The school was a small mud-wall house with a hole in the roof for a chimney. It was situated in a bog in the village of Derry-Garberry, Kilterans.
The pupils sat around by the wall on sods of turf, and held their copies on their knees. They wrote with quill pens which the master made, and they did beautiful writing.
Their books were called- The "first sequel" and the "second sequel"
