At the eastern side of Mount Callan is a mound of stone covered on top by an inscribed Ogham stone supposed to be the Grave of Chonan Maol who was killed in Mount Callan while worshipping the Sun. This was pillaged one time by a man name O Flanagan who found there two Iron spears a helmet and pieces of Iron and Bones. He fixed up the Leacht again but the sons of a widow pillaged it again. Finding the top stone too heavy they split it in two and the two pieces are to be seen still. One is covering the grave The other is thrown aside. The covering piece is inscribed with Ogham which is supposed to read thus :- "Under this stone Lies Conan Maol the fierce and turbulent" Further eastward was a stone structure called Altoir na Greine This was supposed to be the altar for worshipping the Sun It was composed of standing stones covered on top by a large one like a bin A poor farmer broke up the altar and used the stones to Fence his cabbage garden. He died soon afterwards and the stones were used(continues on next page)
