  1. Long ago in the penal days the Catholics were forbidden to go to school except to the Protestant schools, but they would not go to them. The Irish Catholics had such a love for learning that they established Hedge Schools in almost every parish throughout Ireland. They were called Hedge Schools because it used to be by the Hedges and sometimes in old cabins they used to have the schools. The teachers used not get any salaries from the
