- John Carroll is the local thatcher around this district. He is a big tall man about six feet seven in height. The man of the house cuts sticks in the valleys and splits them and they are called scollops. The thatcher gets a gabail of straw and ties it with a súgan and that is called a Gassun. There is an old saying about the thatcher "The windy day is not the day for thatching".
When the thatcher is going to thatch he draws the good straw and leaves all the bad stuff on the ground. First the thatcher puts a line of straw about a foot in width and then he scollops it. The thatcher uses a thatching knife a rake about two feet long and a mallet. When the(continues on next page)
