    "To be sure you can" says the servant.
    When the king saw Jack and examined the inscription he was overjoyed.
    "You are the very man we want, Jack" says he.
    Then he told him of a wicked giant who lived near. His people, he said, had suffered very much from his cruelty.
    "I will give you a great reward if you kill him," said the king.
    "To be sure I will , says Jack.
    The King then gave him a caution. He told him of the "Bare Legged Thief" who always obstructed those who went to fight the giant. "You will see him perched high up in a tree on the way to the giants house," he said. "He will ask you to help him down, but for your life dont listen to him, or if you do, put him off with an excuse."
    Jack went on his way. He hadn't gone very far through a thick wood when he heard a voice calling him -"
    "Take me down, take me down" Looking up he saw a mis-shapen old man who reached out his hands to him.
