- Shovels are still used. The very best for general use is also made with a socket to take the handle. In the old style the handle went into a ring at the top.
- These have changed very little in the past 50 yrs. The old timber scythe tree and revet scythe are hard to beat. In rough ground to stoney the rod scythe has advantages. The writer's uncle, who had advanced ideas was one of the first to use a scythe around here for cutting corn. Fearing ridicule he went out one moonlit night with scythe(continues on next page)
