    big enough, and they made use of an old building in Castlelake to act as a hospital.
    Relief.
    In 1848 the government gave the people 2 lbs of Indian meal to each person in the week.
    Landlords & evictions
    In 1855 the landlord cleared all the tenants from the lands of Synone and Ballinree and turned the place into a ranch.
    Other famines.
    In 1879 the people were so poor that the union had to put them breaking stones to relieve them. They broke them in Ballytarsna in the quarry beside John Dwyer's, beside the main Dublin Road.
    In 1880 they got the relief meal during the winter and spring. There were allowed a certain quantity per head.
