- Shops were not common in former times. People had to go to the nearest town to make purchases. Goods were sold after Mass. Cabbage Plants were also sold after Mass and are still. After Mass on Sunday is a very busy time in Cappawhite.The people had to walk to Tipperary to make purchases long ago and walk back again in one day. Men used to go around gathering rags and feathers. Men and women’s used to go around selling small articles such as hairpins, studs, brooches, necklaces, spools and pencils. There are not many of these people going around now. They were called pedlars.These are the names of coins. A tanner is sixpence. A Bob is a shilling. A Copper is a penny. A brown is five shillings.
