  1. Local Marriage Customs
    Marriages usually take place in Shrove. In every district there used to be an old man called the matchmaker. He knew all the people who were thinking of getting married for miles around him.
    He used to start a match for a couple. First he would go to the man’s house and acquaint him about a certain girl. He used to make arrangements for her people and him to meet in a public house. There they would arrange the money matters. Next they would appoint a day to go see the man’s place.
    If they liked his farm they appointed a night for the bachelor to see the girl. If all parties were satisfied they named a day to meet in town and he got his money and made her a present and
