  1. The Potato Crop.
    Potatoes are grown on our farm. There is usually an acre of ground under them and this amount does not vary very much.
    My father prepares the ground but he does not manure it until the drills are opened. He first ploughs the ground twice and then harrows it and rolls it until it is very fine. He then opens the drills with the plough. Next the sgollans are spread about a foot apart in the drills. They are covered with farm yard manure and some artificial manure and then the drills are closed. Sometimes farmers help each other at the sowing and picking of the potatoes. This is called "choring". When the potatoes are growing they are first grubbed and then heaped, that is the earth is put up to the growing stalks. Then about the beginning of July they are sprayed to protect them from the blight. They are usually sprayed twice and sometimes three times. About the end of October they are
