  1. The following was composed at Christmas 1936 by my uncle P. J. Ahern Glensharrold Ardagh, Co. Limerick who died in October 1937 aged 66 years.

A Christmas Message to the President

God Prosper De Valera may he never come to grief
Sure his worth cannot be measured by free gifts of milk or beef
Inspired to wrest his country from the stranger's stranglehold
He's the Moses of his people, like that Patriarch of old

Oh, Ireland, over fertile, potential wealth contains
With her picturesque green valleys and her undulating plains
Whose produce was intended by the God of love and grace
To maintain in decent comfort the native Irish race

Too long it had been plundered by a horde of foreign knaves
Too long its suffering people were branded abject slaves
Till Pearse of Heroic action availed by one great chance
To rouse the slumbering nation from her long and weary trance

Ah, some who should be helping to keep the foe at bay
Through sordid love of lucre, are blindly led astray
" The land to feed the bullock " to them seems second heaven
Even though the poor may perish as in tragic 47
