  1. An old school - now an old cabin - is still in the farm of John Sheahan Dirreen . The school was taught by Ml Sheehan .

    The last old hedge school in the parish was in .The Glen , Cratloe , in the farm of Richard Wolfe whose grand daughter, Miss D. Wolfe lives there at present.
    The hedge school was in use there about 40 yrs ago - no trace of the building is there at present.

    Hedge school in Athea was taught by Ml Langan better known then as Michéal Óg - 136 years ago . He worked there for about a year and lived among the people.
    He composed the following:-

    Is aingheis mo ghnó 'sis ró bhocht dealbh mar shlíghe.
    Ag teagasc na n-óg a's ní foghanta meastar mé dhíol
    Geallaim -se dhóibh gach loma fleasca sa tír
    Gura Fada go ngeóbhfaidh mo shórt sa eatora airís.

    This Michéal óg was a son to Ml Langan, steward to Knight of Glin , who changed his faith about 1750
