- THE PENAL DAYSThe penal days were felt in my district the same as they were felt all over Ireland and some things remain that remind us of them for instance the townland “Cnoc an Éadaigh” which means the “The Hill of the Vestments”. The vestments were hidden in this hill and procured when required. Here and there through the country there are paths known locally as “Mass-Paths”. These paths lead to secluded nooks where Mass was offered during penal times and the “Carrig an Aifrinn” is often at the end of these paths. There is one of these paths in the downland of Coolmore. An old man in this district speaking of the Tithe War mentions the placing of the sheaves of oats in black coffins to be sent to the minister.
