  1. The "Old Abbey" of Mourneabbey is situated on the main road to Cork six miles south of Mallow. Beside it, is an old graveyard. In a field beside the ruins is an old millstone and the field is locally known as "Páirc a Mhuillinn". On a hill overlooking the Abbey are the ruins of an old castle. On another hill nearby there were two towers. The stones of these towers were used for making the new road to Cork.
The Abbey was built in the year twelve hundred. It was first occupied by an order of monks, known as the Knights Templars of Jerusalem. Attached to the Abbey was a large farm and the monks main occupation was farming, milling and assisting the poor on the road, something similar to the great Monastery of Mount Mellary at the present day. IT IS AN INTERESTING COINCIDENCE THAT THE PRESENT OWNER OF THE OLD ABBEY IS A BROTHER OF THE LORD ABBOT OF MOUNT MELLARY.
