  1. It is said if you were out late on all Souls' Night you would be caught by the Souls of the dead. Long ago on this Night the people in the country used to bring in a cock and put him on a perch over the door. If the cock crew before the clock struck 3.o.c, they used to say that something awful was to happen, and if he didn't crow, they would thank the Lord. Then one of them would get up and put the cock out in his house and come in again and leave the door open for the rest of the Night.
