- (continued from previous page)on islands the people there used to live on fish and shell fish. There was once a man who lived at Cappabeg, a place near Ballydehob who lived on water-cress and salt and he used to pack furze in a bundle with his bare feet. He wore a white flannel wrapper and he never wore a shoe or stocking. The family had their last meal at six o'clock in the evening. On Easter Sunday everybody ate an amount of eggs and they did not get them again until the next Easter Sunday. Pancake Night was another feast they had long ago, and on that night an amount of pancakes was eaten. The pancakes were made of yellow meal gruel. That feast is held even unto this day. Wooden bowls and platters were used before cups became common. They had also brown earthen-ware jugs where they kept the drinking water.
Long ago the people had bread called Stampy Bread. This is how it was made, they put a quarter stone(continues on next page)
