  1. Old Roads.
    The road leading from the ruined workhouse at Schull through the gap of Mount Gabriel and connecting at Laharn with the road from Ballydehob to Dunbeacon was constructed in the year 1838. Previos to the construction of this road a path led through the lowest part of the valley between Mount Gabriel and Leiter Hill over the gap and went went straight down the nothernside. About ten years before the construction of this road a wood was planted at the northern side of Mount Gabriel level with the gap.
