The local legend to account for the Killing of the wren is as follows. The Irish and the Danes were at war. The former were about to attack the latter unawares, at night. A wren happened to hop on a drum nearby a sleeping sentry and woke him up. He aroused the camp and the Irish were forced to retreat.
