- In the townland of Cillerovane (which is locally interpreted as the Roman Church stands a remarkable Pillar Stone. All things point to the fact that it was once a place of worship.
At a distance only the tall pillar stone about 7 feet high can be seen. On examining the ground around it about 9 smaller stones just beneath the surface of the ground may be noticed. These are about 3 ft high having a curious notch or groove on the top edge of each and extending downwards about a foot (See fig 3)
When carefully examined carvings can be seen on both sides of the big stone (Figs I & II). On the East side are what may be termed Pagan drawings, the most prominent of which is a cresent, little squares containing a circle and various lines, and at the bottom are some markings like a roughly drawn axe.
On the Western side is a clearly cut cross about 9 or 10 ins in height and the same in width. Over that is carved a figure in the posture of adoration. Around the head of the pillar on the same side are the remains of a band of interlaced carving. Thrown on the ground nearby are two circular roughly hewn stone slabs, with a basin shaped(continues on next page)
