  1. There was a hedge school up from the Rossmacowen bridge.
    The school was built of sods and stones and had no roof. The teachers name was Mr. Chambley, and he was called the scholar. He was from Dunmanway and was lodging in Bonnow Rossmacowen.
    There were about forty children in the school and each schoolar brought a shilling a year. They used to sit on stools made of stone and write on slates. The subjects they had were English, Irish, writing and sums. When the weather was raining they used to go into a hayshed belonging.
