  1. Máire Ceannuide was a fortune teller she travelled at night time and was supposed to be in communication with the dead.
About eighty years ago a number of people left Castletown for America. At that time it took about three months to cross the Atlantic in sailing ships. All went well until nearing the America coast the weather got terrible bad and the ship was wrecked off Newfoundland. They had no boats to take off the passengers so they battened them down in the holds, but as the crew were putting off from the ship a man from Ardgroom jumped from the ship into the boat after bursting the hatch open, some of the crew said to throw him overboard but the captain said no to give him a chance as he was a good man.
When the news of the wreck reached Castletown there was great lamenting and there were wakes held for them that were lost including the Ardgroom man. Now Máire called to the Ardgroom man's house and told them to throw away the pipes as she said Jack will be home in a weeks time but she also said to his father that he will get a watery grave. He was drowned in Kenmare river within twelve months.
