  1. A dreadful drowning accident happened on the Shannon at Lanesborough in 1701.
    At that period there was no bridge over the Shannon at Lanesborough and people crossed the river in a pontoon or ferry boat.
    On Monday 2nd February 1701, when forty-six persons, with their stock and commodities were crossing from the Connaught side to attend a fair held on the Rathcline or Leinster side of the river, the pontoon foundered. Thirty-five of the occupants perished, eleven were saved. Richard Davys - who made a record of the accident in his diary and Mrs Poll Rooney were among those saved. The latter was carrying to the fair a basketful of fowl, including a "March Cock". A cock, hatched in the month of March, was popularly regarded a "lucky bird" and her safety was attributed at the time the "March Cock".
    Thady Murray, a flax merchant from Kilmacknaney, Curraghroe, and Mrs Hanly wife of a cooper in Kilteevan were among those who perished. Mrs Hanly and her husband were
