    Another strange custom is that of engaging the oldest people in the district to mourn and wail aloud over a dead person. This is called "keening" the dead (from the Irish word "caoinead" lamenting) and is carried on even today in many districts including our own, thus bearing out the truth of the old Irish Sean-fhocal "Ni lia tír ná nós.
