People" will not take the butter.
This is an old custom with regard to buildings. When a man is about to build a house he puts four little heaps of stones at the four corners to mark the site. If they are stirred he does not build the house there. another custom is that when a man is going on a journey he puts a bit of oatenmeal cake in his pocket to keep away all misfortune.
Washing one's face in the dew is a May Day custom. Milk is never given away on that day because people believe that of this is done milk will be given away all the year round.
Many of these customs have already died away but they are still adhered to by a goodly number of country people.
