  1. Marriage Customs are plentiful in Ireland. It is said that those that are to be married should be married in Shrove-tide. May is an unlucky month to get married, but June is a lucky month. Wednesday is a lucky day. In olden times the priest married the people in their own houses and then the priest stayed all day and mixed among the people like them-selves.
    At the marriage a collection is made for the poor. Any-one poor or rich can go to the marriage when invited. The mother of the bride gives something to her daughter such as a bed or a strong box to hold her clothes and sometimes feather pillows. A slipper is tied to the back of the car in which the newly married pair go on their honeymoon. This is for luck. Rice is also thrown at the marriage pair for luck
