  1. Fairs.
    there were not local fairs held around this district long ago, but cattle buyers used to come to the farmers, to buy cattle from them, as they still do at the present day.
    When they buy a cow for 14£, they give the man about 2/6 for luck, and sometimes they make a bargain to split a pound, and then the man that is selling the cow says"Sold again" at whatever price it would be.
    They spit on their hands or strike them together, when making the bargain.
    A fair is held in Tullamore on the first Friday of every month, and in Mountmellick every third Tuesday in the month.
