- The houses long ago were not the same as ours. There was a bed in the kitchen called a settle bed, The chimney was usually made of clay and wattles.People of the olden times made candles out of rushes,They peeled the rushes. then they left them up to dry and after a certain time they were ready for use, These candles helped to give them light at night. The fire was generally situated on the hearth, There were various ways of thatching long ago. Rushes were often used to do the work, In these times there was a half door on every house, but this custom has nearly faded away altogether, except in very few places,
