    And each one to their homes again his way he quickly wends

    No moon or star was in the sky or naught else bright around,
    Except the snow which now did lie two inches on the ground,
    And Peter Finn had far to go and all those who saw they say,
    His zig zag foot prints on the ground told their own tale next day.

    His path lay over the field and waste,
    Across many a hedge and ditch,
    But still he could not make much haste for the night was dark as pitch,
    As he trudged on merrily,
    He hummed a lively tune,
    And wished that it might truely be the rising of the moon.
