- "Tis equal to the running of the wild turf"This said when a person goes from house to house in search of a loan of a horse - and does not get horse.
The origin seems to have been the following"There was a great plague in the west of Ireland and the cure was for a person to get a sod of turf (lighting) in the morning and take it to three houses where there was no fire (that is kindle fires in three different houses) The houses 'served' would escape the plague. Sometimes the person would have to go maybe ten miles to get a house without a fire.
"I'll eat my own lamb
My chicken and ham
I'll shear my own sheep
And wear it"
