- (continued from previous page)made, they were to make a cross of their spades, and then commence to dig, but on peril of their lives they were not to venture outside the ring until after 1 a.m.
Shortly after nightfall the men repaired to the spot, taking with them the holy water. and the tools. They made the ring as they were told, and immediately proceeded to dig. After long and tiring work they came to a large flat stone They ceased their labours to gloat on the treasure which was to be theirs. Suddenly a tall man came striding towards them. He asked them why they were digging, and when he was told, he inquired why they wanted the money. One of the men replied that they intended having a good time drinking, whereupon the man raised his hand, and told them that they would never spend any of the treasure on drink. In a terrible voice he bade them begone. They fled incontinently from the spot, leaving all their implements behind them. No trace of any digging could be found next morning. None of the men lived long afterwards, and it is the general belief in the locality that they died after the fright they had received. No further attempt has been made since then to recover the treasure.
