    except shoeing. He may get a few coulters to pierce and point during the months January and February, wheels to bind in the Summer and some repairs to the mowing maching which are done in the open air from June to August and September. The local smiths were noted for curing all sorts of diseases on horses. Some of them were better than a Vet, as regards firing and blistering the splint with a sally stick, and the curb and spavin with irons. He would give you a bottle of forge water that would cure your feet after a long journey. The ashes and sparks came in useful when binding wheels.
