   283 Hedge-schools in my district long ago. During the sixteenth and seventeenth century, Ireland was wholly governed by the English, and numerous were the persecutions the Irish had to undergo under that harsh Government. England always tried to make this country into a vile barbarous state and its inhabitants to grow up an uncultured and an uneducated race. The principal aim of the English was the abolishment of the public schools in Ireland which commenced in the reign of King Edward III.
