    The ancestor of the present Lord Kenmare got land because he was an Undertaker. The Brownes also acquired land from the MacCarthy Mor through mortgage.
    The land was divided into farms under the land lord's guidance. Farms were sub-divided among members of families on marriage. Very often the land was held and worked in common but not later than seventy years ago. Though holding the land in common the families lived in separate houses.
    The landlord exercised special powers over his tenants. He transferred a farm to a man's son at the father's request. Tenants were not permitted greyhounds. They were punished for hunting or fowling. No bog would be given to them if the local gamekeeper
