    He often swam the cattle and horses across this lake.
    There are different versions of Shane’s death – One is that the people lay in ambush for him in Strawmacelroy and shot him. His wife and sons, fearing the same fate, drowned themselves in the lake.
    Yet another version is that he foolishly took into his confidence a widow of the district and through her met his death. His body, it is said, was beaheaded – the head being sent to Monaghan town and the body being thrown in Loch an Albanaigh – from which his followers afterwards took it and had it buried decently.
    A more meritorious story, however, is told about the notorious Seán. It is told that he pursued the priest-murderer from Leac-an-tSagairt where he had shot Father McKenna. Sean followed him to his refuge in Anketell Grove near Emyvale, and awaited his hour of revenge. The murderer was feeding a cow in the yard and Sean succeeded in shooting him from his little hiding place near by
