    A fair was held once every year at MULLACREW. It was a great day's outing for young people and all the gypsies, quack doctors and singers came to it. If a man were going to the fair to sell a beast and if he met a red haired woman he very often turned home as he would be sure to make a bad sale if he went. During a sale a neighbour generally stepped in and finished the bargain by spitting on his hand and dividing the difference in price. A luck penny was always given back to the buyer, and when a horse was sold the seller handed a new halter to the buyer.
    Cattle were sold in olden times at crossroads, but custom ceased as prices were not good.
