    Dan Langton of the Colliery...

Dan Langton of the Colliery was noted for his smart answers and funny stories. One evening big Jim Bolger call him and inquired how the weather glass in the pit was. Dan answered in his usual polite voice, "Going down," "How are the going on with boring?" asked Bolger. "Going down again," said Dan. "Are they near the coal asked Bolger. "On top of it," replied Dan.
