  1. There are two forges in my parish. One in Ballymote and the other in Rathmullen. The smiths are John Connell of Ballymote and Padraich Gaffney of Rathmulhen. The one in Ballymote is situated beside a cross-roads one leading to Boyle and the other to Ballaghderrin The one in Rathmulhen is situated on the side of the Gurteen road. The Connels and the Gaffneys have been smiths for about three hundred years or perhaps longer.
    The one in Ballymote is a very big house with three or four fires in it. It is roofed with currugated iron. The one in Rathmulhen is much the same but smaller. He puts shoes on horses and tyres on carts out in the open air. He sharpens
